Legion

played 16th Nov 1980

LEGION won the Owen O'Sullivan Cup for the first time, (East Kerry Junior Championship), at Fossa on Sunday, beating Listry by 1-7 to 1-5 (half-time 0-5 to 0.2) . The late Owen O'Sullivan who the trophy is dedicated to was a member of Firies G.A.A. and a full-hearted supporter of East Kerry football.

The Fossa pitch was in perfect condition for the game, which was close, competitive and fair, with plenty of good football and well refereed by T. J. O'Connor (Ballymac). Scores came slowly, and were hard earned. Legion had five points, four of them from frees, and a point from play by Mike Moynihan to lead 0-5 to 0-2 at half time.

A great goal for Legion by Pat Moynihan on the half-volley from a ground foot-pass from Pa Joe Sweeney, who had an outstanding game, sealed it although Listry came back with a goal and three points. Legion had two more points.

This was a great team effort by Legion as stated by team captain Donal O’Donoghue at the presentation of the trophy.
