Spa B

played 30th Nov 1997

The footballers of Spa captured the O'Sullivan Cup run in association with Killarney Oils. when they defeated a determined and young Fossa side on an excellent surface at the Dr Crokes pitch on Sunday. Spa won this game through a combination of tight defensive play, dominance at centrefield and a forward line capable of scoring. However, they made heavy weather of securing victory against a Fossa side that fought gamely throughout.

Sean Casey, playing at right full forward for Spa, stamped his authority on the game with a personal tally of 1-5 after sending over two points in the opening ten minutes without reply from Fossa, whose first score, a point, was scored by corner-forward Kevin Myers. Kevin Myers was to register all of Fossa's scores and he was able to do this because of the support he got up front from James Weldon, Noel Coffey and Killian Lynch.

After 20 minutes, Spa's Sean Casey took a free 30 metres out and to the right of the Fossa goalposts. His kick sailed over the heads of defenders and forwards alike and into the top, left-hand corner of the Fossa net. This score was a severe blow to Fossa, who up to this point had only one point on the scoreboard Shortly before halftime. Myers put over another point to leave the score: Spa 1-4, Fossa 0-2.

On resumption, Fossa made a determined attack on the Spa defense and Michael O'Shea kicked the ball into James Weldon, who found Kevin Myers running free, Myers ended the movement by rattling the net for a well-taken goal. This score left just two points between the sides, but Fossa were not to score again for the next 20 minutes. Meanwhile Spa stretched their lead to four points. Fossa then began to claw their way back and with three minutes left the gap was down to two points again.

However, try as they might, Fossa could not get through for the goal they needed and Sean Casey copper fastened victory for Spa with a point in injury time.
